These "adavus" are divided into families, the number of families varies according to type (PRANI). Changes in adavus between different styles can be: the position of the head, steps, jumps, and in particular the position of the hands.

The adavus form of labor and coordination of movements of feet, hands, eyes ... are executed to the beat of rhythmic syllables called Sollokhatu "(each family corresponds adavu a shollokhatu) such as "dit dit tei" or "tai and tai - tai and tai" and many others, each syllable is used for a particular sequence of motion.

The Bharatanatyam has two well-defined aspects: technique and expression, both of them use hand gestures. In the first aspect is used as a aesthetics (to), while in the second acquire sacred meaning to tell stories and myths Indians (mudra).
